Rented an SUV for travel to a city 2 hours inland in Brazil. It was quick and easy and the deposit was very approachable, not the $1,000-$2,500 the big international guys will ask you to place a hold on. All in I rented the car for 1 day for $34 plus $20 for the top insurance

My experience dates back to 2 weeks ago. I rented an economy car from this agency for a total of 20 days. The rental seemed cheaper than the competition. However, the price raised due to "basically mandatory" insurance - if you do not buy THAT insurance the car is not covered by ANY insurance, not even if you get rear-ended. But the real *scam* came out when I returned the car. At the car check the driver's door lock was found picked and the spare wheel and jack missing. I had not noticed anything since the car had an electronic key and I would use that to open/lock the car from a distance. Now, this is the SECOND time out of TWO rentals that this happens to me. Mind you that in both cases I always parked the car inside a guarded condo garage at night and during the day I would go visit beaches far away from the city. Talking to the agency counter girl, she admitted that some rental car plates are known by local thieves who then would break in and steal the spare wheel and jack. This explanation is clearly a partial one. How did the thieves know where and when my car was parked? Why did they pick my car two times out of two? Why did they not steal any mechanical parts but only easily replaceable ones? Rental cars have GPS and the agency may easily have an agreement with these fellows for which they pay them a sum of what they get from tourists while the thieves return the stolen items to the agency. Got the car on reserve at night. It should be illegal for a rental company to give the car to clients without freaking gas. They told me to return the car also on reserve. Seriously? So I should drive the car on reserve and risk running out of gas so we’re fair and square? I complained but nothing was done. Apart from the gas situation, everything was fine.

They advertise prices lower than the competition (not much lower, but then again, they make it look like a bargain), but those are underestimated. They do not include insurance and other taxes. They offered me a pricey full coverage policy, which I refused, at first, until they said it was for the whole rental period, sounding more acceptable. When I returned the car, they charged me the insurance for every single day of rental, that is, they simply LIED about it. So, the prices may seem attractive, but don't trust them, go for the bigger rental companies, don't be temped to save a few bucks, you will regret it greatly. Also, the office is located in a dangerous neighbourhood, meaning, you may also get in trouble depending on the time you will return the car (their lift to and from the airport took almost two hours, so a lot of bad things could have happened, besides sunburns...)
